Building a Seamless Surgical Ecosystem: Why Proximie’s Ground-Up Tech Stack Matters

As the first real-time virtual procedure platform, today Proximie is delivering thousands of surgical telepresence sessions in over 800 operating rooms around the world.

Proximie’s growth has been realised through partnerships with both health systems and medical devices, and the results are clear to see. Proximie is operating in over 50 countries, working alongside some of the most respected healthcare organisations and more than 40 of the world's leading medical device organisations. Our platform is now home to a vast library of over 80,000 individual surgical views videos.

As much as the plan is to shape the future of healthcare, the fact is Proximie is having a critical impact now, playing a key role in tackling today’s healthcare challenges head-on and is driving fundamental change in the operating room.

Proximie delivers unmatched value in telepresence, content management and data insights. But what truly sets it apart from other platforms is that it owns the entire tech stack from end-to-end. It is built from the ground up -  there is no reliance on third party plug-ins or add-ons -  Proximie is Proximie all the way through from the backend to the front.

Built with permeability in mind

Clever technology is no good in isolation. This is why Proximie fosters an ecology of technological solutions and a seamless environment that unites the diverse technologies that exist in any given OR. A platform that becomes the catalyst for better and more integrated communication; from device to doctor and everyone, and thing, in between. This is a very unique position for Proximie, as the company’s CEO and Founder, Dr. Nadine Hachach-Haram FRCS (Plast), BEM, explains.

“There are so many fantastic innovations that are already having a real-world impact on patient care,” Dr Nadine says, “From AI’s capacity to provide high-levels of objective insight that improves healthcare performance and in turn improve patient outcomes, to the boom of hugely disruptive robotics systems that are fundamentally changing how surgery is delivered. But the thing that is most exciting from Proximie’s perspective is our place at the epicentre of these new technologies entering the OR.

“We’re really shifting to becoming the central aggregator of these innovations. Using Proximie, we're laying the foundations and the piping for all of these Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and robotic platforms to really start talking to each other, sharing and collecting data in very meaningful and actionable ways. Our platform is creating the common language between each device, connecting them and indeed the people and processes within any given healthcare setting, together. This in turn is going to help to create automated elements of healthcare - clinicians spend almost half their working day on administrative tasks, with almost 40% of their time with patients spent on entering or retrieving data on the computer - that will free up teams’ time to focus on their patients.”

Last year Proximie formally launched its own software development kit (SDK) - a collection of software development tools in one holistic package built for medical device organisations and robotics platforms who have or want to support real-time ears, eyes and interactions with customers in the OR. It is a complete, white label-compatible, customisable connectivity platform that reduces risk, cost and launch delay for devices as well as providing outstanding image quality and a premium developer experience. Through the Proximie SDK, there is finally a way in which to connect devices, data and expertise and turn the once analogue and wasteful OR, into a digitally-connected, data-driven blueprint for future healthcare delivery.

The importance of owning your entire tech stack

Proximie’s SDK has enabled scalability by creating alignment from the front to the back end. By using the SDK, developers will gain unprecedented control over Proximie’s pioneering cloud-based infrastructure on their own terms using a single private tenancy base.

It is fairly easy to see the utility and benefits of the front end: from accelerating surgical training and education to improving efficiency and servicing of devices. Proximie offers a comprehensive, interactive suite of features and tools already driving quality and productivity improvements across the healthcare landscape.

The back-end delves into Proximie’s core infrastructure; built from the ground-up with no reliance on third parties and specifically designed for the unique security and compliance needs of the healthcare industry. Taking just one simple example to highlight the importance of this, Proximie hosts its own email servers when inviting people to sessions or informing of schedule changes; it doesn’t use a third party or any other email plugins unlike other companies. While it might appear easier to use third parties in the beginning, it ultimately becomes impossible for healthcare organisations to sign data agreements which in turn makes it impossible for a company to scale.

Proximie’s SDK is easy to integrate, making it simple for developers to connect their applications seamlessly with the Proximie platform.

Proximie unlocks the potential of the operating room of the future

The operating room of the future isn’t simply a collection of technologies and isolated data. It’s a seamlessly integrated environment where different technologies work together. Proximie acts as the central hub, ensuring data flows flawlessly, collaboration overcomes physical boundaries, and innovation thrives. By fostering a truly connected ecosystem, Proximie actively drives the future of surgery, not just for tomorrow, but for today’s healthcare landscape.
