Case Study

“We are in an unprecedented time of surgical innovation…and one of the most important things is that when we bring in a new surgical technology, we don’t bring in new risk,” says Jared Torkington, Professor of Surgical Innovation and Colorectal Surgeon at University Hospital Wales.

Within colorectal surgery, a new technique called TaTME is being used to excise very low rectal cancers by experienced laparoscopic and transanal resection surgeons. After receiving physical learning in this technique from a fellow expert surgeon in Amsterdam, Dr Roel Hompes, Prof Torkington harnessed Proximie’s ability to connect experts remotely for ongoing support during cases to ensure he was not introducing any unnecessary risk, and to maximise the patient benefit. Via Proximie,  the expert could be physically present in Amsterdam, while being virtually present with Prof Torkington in Cardiff during each surgery, enabling interaction and joint decision making. Prof Torkington added: “Using Proximie avoids the usual mechanisms where surgeons have to travel back and forth to different theatres to receive training…this is both time consuming and expensive for the individual and organisations. By having the remote element, Proximie allows people to dip in and dip out when needed, leading to potential cost savings and allowing us to maximise what people do in theatre.”
